Tottenham star Harry Kane fears rivals in Golden Boot race as he targets more goal records

Harry Kane believes the fear of being dethroned as the Premier League’s No1 striker is pushing him to new goalscoring heights.

The Spurs star reached 100 goals in the competition in just 141 matches on Sunday, with only Alan Shearer (124) bringing up his century more quickly. If Kane stays at the top of the chart — he has 22 goals, one more than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah — he would win the Golden Boot for a third successive season.

Yet, Kane admitted he is always looking over his shoulder.

“There are a lot of good young players coming through and trying to take this spot,” said the 24-year-old. “The academy system is getting better and better, so better players are being produced. Those players are coming for people like me.

“I have to make sure I stay on top of my game. It is a short career and I have to try to do as much as I can.”

Kane may be given a breather on Wednesday when Tottenham entertain Newport in their FA Cup fourth-round replay.

Serge Aurier, Danny Rose, Victor Wanyama, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Erik Lamela will be pushing for starting roles, although Mauricio Pochettino may be more cautious with the fit-again Toby Alderweireld.
