Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has confirmed the club’s desire for a new midfielder amid interest in Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Danish international is interested in a new challenge after three seasons with Spurs and has attracted the eyes of a number of European clubs.

Spurs are likely to demand significantly more than the £15m they paid Southampton to sign the 27-year-old but are yet to receive any official proposals.

Hojbjerg has asked to be allowed to join the LaLiga giants this summer should they agree a fee with the club as Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou considers a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Postecoglou has talked up the likes of Yves Bissouma and Giovani Lo Celso as he stamps his mark onto the team, potentially limiting Hojbjerg’s prospects of regular first-team football.

Speaking to Spanish outlet AS, Simeone was asked about the interest in the Dane.

“There are names the club is working on to address the situation of necessity and obligation,” he replied.

“The club will decide, we need a new midfielder.”
