Ryan Sessegnon says competition for places at Tottenham is pushing him "to the limit", but revealed he has no plans to go back out on loan.

Sessegnon made his first Spurs appearance since March 2020 in Thursday's Europa Conference League defeat to Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Bundesliga club Hoffenheim, making 28 appearances, and is now competing with Sergio Reguilon and Ben Davies for a spot on the left side of Nuno Espirito Santo’s defence.

"There's competition everywhere in the team but three good players in one position at left-back and it's good for everyone involved," Sessegnon said.

"It pushes everyone to their limit. Everyone wants to be playing but only one can play at a time. Everyone is ready for the challenge and that's what's in front of us at the moment.

"It's for me now to get on the pitch and try to play as many games as I can and try to stay injury-free. Last season I played a lot of games for Hoffenheim and I enjoyed my time there but I'm here now and I focused here on playing as many games as I can and the gaffer is giving me opportunities to play.

"I don't have any plans to go back out on loan at the moment, I don't think. I'm just really focused on doing my job here at Tottenham."

Sessegnon was free-scoring as a teenager with Championship Fulham but sees his future at left-back or left wing-back, and was compared to Ashley Cole by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

"I prefer both to be honest – wing-back as a five or left-back as a four, I defend and attack in the same situation so it doesn't really matter to me," he said.

Sessegnon will be hoping for another start as Spurs aim to turn around the Conference League play-off in the second leg against Pacos in London next Thursday.

"This week the gaffer prepped us on how they were going to play and how aggressive they would be and that's how they were," he said of Pacos.

"They made it difficult for us. We know we can do better. In football there are other chances to put it right and that's what we need to do."
