The Video Assistant Referee system (VAR) was the centre of attention at Wembley at Tottenham had two FA Cup goals disallowed against Rochdale in an extraordinary first half.

Spurs thought they had taken an early lead through Erik Lamela's strike on Thursday night, but referee Paul Tierney, after consulting the VAR, ruled the goal out.

It is thought Spanish striker Llorente fouled Harrison McGahey in the build-up.

BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage described the decision as "ludicrous", but there was more to come.

Spurs did take the lead in the 23rd minute, but not before Tierney had consulted VAR once again to determine whether Lucas Moura should have been awarded a penalty.

The official dismissed it but Tottenham were ahead shortly afterwards when Heung-Min Son slotted home.

Another lengthy VAR ruling saw the home side given a penalty for Matt Done's foul on Kieran Trippier which started outside the box and carried on inside, leading to the award.

Son feinted as he stepped up to score and was booked, with the effort chalked off.

Former Premier League referee Chris Foy told BT Sport: "It's called illegal feinting. The decision is correct."

Remarkably, Rochdale equalised after 31 minutes when Andy Cannon's ball over the top picked out Stephen Humphrys and the striker took a touch before neatly firing the ball past goalkeeper Michel Vorm.

Inside Wembley the initial celebrations turned to confusion as the officials paused to review the decision.

Players returned to their positions for the restart and, in freezing temperatures, were kept waiting for around two minutes before a call was made.

In the stands, those outside the press box and without access to a screen murmured, before cheers from the away end greeted the gesture for a free-kick. A strange experience indeed.
