New Tottenham stadium: Mauricio Pochettino expects to play Champions League quarter-finals at new ground

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed he expects to play Tottenham’s next home game in the Champions League at the new stadium.

Pochettino reached the last eight of the Champions League for the first time with Tottenham after a 1-0 win in Germany saw them knock out Borussia Dortmund following the 3-0 victory at Wembley last month.

Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday was, as it stands, their final appearance at Wembley following delays to the new stadium, with confidence growing within the club that they will not return to the national stadium this season.

“I expect to play at the new stadium,” Pochettino said. “I was talking yesterday with Daniel [Levy, the Tottenham chairman] and he was very positive, I hope yes and I wish we can play in our new stadium.

“We were sitting and listening to the Champions League song and we were talking with Jesus [Perez] saying it will be amazing to be in the new stadium listening to that song before the game.

"Now we are in the quarter-final I hope we can finish and we can listen to the song there.”

The next home game currently comes against Brighton on April 7, though that could be rearranged should they beat Millwall in the FA Cup quarter-finals, with the first leg of the Champions League last-eight taking place on April 9/10.

As there is no seeding, it is not known until the draw whether Tottenham’s first leg will be at home, with the second legs are held on April 16/17.

Tottenham still need to obtain a safety certificate from the local authority, and a license from the Sports Grounds Safety Authority, before they can move into their new home.

In Dortmund, though, the focus was on a thoroughly professional performance from Tottenham. Holding firm as the hosts, backed by the famous ‘Yellow Wall’, something Spurs have taken inspiration from for their new stadium, proving they had enough European knowhow to managed occasions such as this.

“They deserved it, the effort was brilliant,” Pochettino said. “Playing with a massive disadvantage with the first leg at Wembley and tonight I think it was a great effort and I want to congratulate my players.

“Then of course very proud for our fans and the club. More than happy, it's a season, a very particular season. I think to help the club achieve, not only reach the quarter-finals but be in a good mood if we are to change again, move and open our new stadium.

“I think it's a fantastic season, a season that we are going to remember. Of course that is only we are going to be in the Champions League quarter-finals but it's a fantastic achievement for the team.”
