Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Tottenham will trigger an extension clause in Toby Alderweireld's contract.

The Belgium defender, who looked set to leave the club in the summer, is due to run out of contract at the end of the season but has a year's option to run until 2020.

However, it also has a £25million release clause that runs up to the last two weeks of the summer transfer window.

Pochettino said: "Yes, for sure. It is obvious. It is the same situation as Jan (Vertonghen)."

Alderweireld was a target for Manchester United during the summer transfer window, but Ed Woodward was never going to meet Tottenham’s valuation, believed to be around £60m.

United had as recently as November been eyeing a cut-price January deal for the Belgian in January, with former manager Jose Mourinho scouting the centre-back during Belgium's Nations League win over Iceland in Brussels.

However, Mourinho's exit may alter United's pursuit of Alderweireld with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking over as caretaker manager while Woodward and the Glazers draw up plans to hire both a permanent coach and a director of football.
