Tottenham's Dele Alli withdraws from England squad with 'minor muscle strain'

Dele Alli has withdrawn from the England squad after suffering what the FA term a “minor muscle strain” in Saturday’s defeat to Spain.

The Tottenham midfielder played the full 90 minutes in the 2-1 loss at Wembley and will return to his club side for further treatment.

The FA confirmed that no further additions are planned to Gareth Southgate’s squad, to which Leicester duo Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray were added before Tuesday’s friendly at the King Power against Switzerland.

Luke Shaw will also be unavailable to Southgate after suffering a concussion in the Uefa Nations League match, his first start for the Three Lions in three years.

No timeline was offered on a potential recovery for Alli ahead of a crucial run of games for Tottenham, who host Liverpool at Wembley in Saturday’s early kick-off before an away trip to Inter Milan in their first game of the Champions League group stage.
