Tottenham's Harry Kane has lost his edge and was lucky to keep England spot, says Tony Cascarino

Tottenham's Harry Kane has lost his edge and was fortunate to be handed a start by new England boss Sam Allardyce on Sunday, according to Tony Cascarino.

The 23-year-old was largely isolated in Slovakia as Wayne Rooney assumed a deep position alongside Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson.

Allardyce sacrificed the Spurs striker as he chased a winner in Trnava, throwing on Daniel Sturridge in the closing stages as Kane's goalless run for club and country extended to 10 competitive games.

And Cascarino believes the Tottenham striker believes he is lacking the menace he brought last season.

"Harry Kane is not right at the moment and I'm surprised he started this game," the former Chelsea forward wrote in The Times.

"The striker has lost his ability to run the channel and is losing foot race - he wasn't doing that 18 months ago when he burst onto the scene with Tottenham Hotspur and England.

"He has not got blistering pace and never will have - but he is a strong runner who can keep a centre back honest. For some reason he is not the same menace as he was and I'm surprised it took Sam Allardyce as long as it did to change his striker in Slovakia.

"Harry has lost that edge that every top striker needs and he needs that back as soon as possible."
