The January transfer window spells excitement as clubs scour the market for suitable additions.

But for many teams, holding on to their key assets will dominate the landscape this month and, looking further ahead, during the summer window.

While Everton and West Brom blocked moves to the capital for John Stones and Saido Berahino respectively during the summer, Southampton maintain a firm stance over their best players as Manchester United circle.

But not every club will be able to rebuff the advances of United as they prepare to launch another spending spree. Louis van Gaal has spent north of £250million since his arrival at Old Trafford and his signings to this point have been underwhelming.

His record, it seems, has not brought about a sense of caution at United as another transfer window rolls around. Indeed, the club are set to give the Dutchman another healthy kitty as he draws up a £400million wishlist.
