Harry Winks has admitted he is "grateful" to Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino for showing faith in his abilities while revealing his new contract will give him a "big boost" this season.

Spurs today announced that the midfielder has extended his contract at the club for a further year, which will see the 21-year-old remain with the north London side until the end of the 2021/2022 season.

The new deal, which will also see Winks improve his salary to about £25,000-per-week, comes off the back of the Spurs academy graduate becoming an increasingly important member of Pochettino's side this term.

Indeed, his performances for Tottenham earned him a new deal last March before the club handed the midfielder another one in September and, now, today.

Winks admits Pochettino has been key to his rise through the ranks at Spurs, and said he hopes to play a major part in the first team in the coming years.

Speaking about his new contract, Winks told Tottenham's official website: "I’m delighted, over the moon to sign another contract with the club, commit my future even more and I’m looking forward to the years ahead.

"I’ve had a lot of game time this year and it’s been everything I’ve wished for since the beginning of the season, but ultimately football can change and I need to keep that level of work rate, keep that work ethic up and keep myself going in the future.

"Obviously I’m doing well on the pitch to be rewarded with this contract but ultimately it doesn’t stop there. As soon as you’re awarded a new contract you’ve got to keep working hard to justify the reason why you got that, so that’s my intention now.

"It [the deal] is a big boost. Ultimately it’s signed now, though, and I’ve got to focus on the pitch, focus on helping the team to get results and hopefully we can push on in these next few weeks, get maximum points and do really well."

When then asked about Pochettino and the way the Argentine and his coaching staff have helped him acclimitise to the demands of the Premier League, Winks said: "He’s a top manager.

"I think all the boys will say it as well. Not just the manager, the staff too – the coaching staff are brilliant here.

"The gaffer has been brilliant for me and obviously as young academy players, all we want is opportunities and the fact that he’s actually given me that and he’s gradually brought me into the team.

"I’m very, very grateful for that."
