Mesut Ozil continues to resist Arsenal’s offer of a new contract as Inter Milan and Manchester United weigh up January moves for the midfielder.

The 28-year-old has so far shown no indication he will commit his future to the Gunners despite being offered a huge pay increase from £140,000-a-week to in excess of £250,000-a-week.

Inter Milan have confirmed they are interested in signing Ozil but president Erick Thohir yesterday voiced doubts as to whether the Gunners would consider allowing him to leave before the end of the season.

Talks are ongoing with Arsenal but Ozil is demanding a fee closer to £350,000-a-week and should the standoff continue into the New Year, the club may consider moving him on if a suitable fee can be agreed, especially given he could walk away for nothing next summer.

Inter are thought to be his most likely destination at present, not least because the strength of United’s interest is yet to become clear.

No formal approach has been made but United will soon have to show their hand as Ozil will be free to talk to Inter and other overseas clubs directly from January 1.

The first-team squad were required to report to the club’s London Colney training base for a series of engagements to satisfy corporate and sponsorship agreements on September 21, the day after the Gunners’ 1-0 League Cup win over Doncaster.
