All of Tottenham's players look up to Mauricio Pochettino as a "father figure", according to Victor Wanyama.

Pochettino joined Spurs from Southampton in the summer of 2014 and has helped transform the north Londoners into a Premier League force.

Tottenham finished third last season and the early signs suggest they will be able to launch another title challenge this term, with several players citing Pochettino as a key reason behind the club's rise.

The players who have signed new contracts in recent weeks have all spoken glowingly about Pochettino, and Wanyama - who worked with the manager at Southampton - says the Argentine coach is held in high regard by his entire playing staff.

"Pochettino is a really good person outside football as well as in football," he told Four Four Two.

"He's like a father figure, always speaking with everyone and giving them advice. All of the players look up to him as a father figure and also as a manager."

Pochettino's presence convinced Wanyama to leave the South Coast and the Kenya international believes he will improve further under the 44-old's guidance.

"He played a big part in convincing me to join the club," Wanyama told Four Four Two.

"I had a few options but he was able to convince me to come here because I had worked with him before and know he is a manager who will improve players.

"He said to me that I should come and try to achieve some things with this club, and that they could win trophies," Wanyama added.

Team spirit is often cited as an integral part of Pochettino's ethos, and Wanyama has received a warm welcome from his new team-mates at White Hart Lane, who form a close-knit group.

"The squad here is full of nice people; everyone has been willing to help," he added.

"There are some big characters here - Jan Vertonghen, Son [Heung-Min], Ben Davies. They're funny guys. So far it's been great."

Spurs are currently second in the table and could go top if they beat West Brom, who proved to be a bogey team last season, following the conclusion of the international break.
