Watford defender Craig Cathcart is out of Tuesday night's Carabao Cup clash with Swansea City, but is fighting to be fit for Saturday’s trip to Wolves.

Cathcart picked up a thigh injury while on international duty with Northern Ireland earlier this month and has not played under new boss Quique Sanchez Flores.

It means the 30-year-old missed Saturday’s 8-0 collapse at Manchester City, and Watford could do with calling upon the centre-back to tighten up their defence.

However Cathcart, while he has been stepping up his recovery, is not fit enough to feature against Swansea at Vicarage Road and may have to wait until the game against Wolves to make his return.

Flores is expected to make changes for Tuesday's match following that drubbing at the Etihad, with Andre Gray and Nathaniel Chalobah two players hoping to come in.

Another change that is likely to take place is in goal. Having never played a Carabao or FA Cup game for Watford, 36-year-old Ben Foster is expected to be given a rest and he has told his team-mates to put the thumping at City behind them.

“You’ve got to let it go and move onto the next one, it’s the only way, there’s no point in dwelling,” said Foster.

“We have to take little positives, at times we had little spells of play and at 1-0 we had a chance with Gerard Deulofeu. Unfortunately, we couldn’t put it away.

"But that’s football, that’s the way it is, you’ve just got to clean yourselves up.

“You’ve got to keep smiling, I’ve just let eight goals in and I’m not happy but you’ve got to put a brave face on.

"It is what it is, there’s no point dwelling and you’ve just got to look towards the next game.”
