Marcus Rashford says Wayne Rooney's career is "nowhere near over" and expects his Manchester United colleague to continue competing for trophies.

Rashford scored 11 goals in all competitions for United and became the the side's focal point following a season-ending knee injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Mourinho’s decision to entrust Rashford with replacing United’s most talismanic figure ahead of club captain Rooney further suggested the latter’s career as a major force is at an end.

However, Rashford said: “Knowing Wayne, it is nowhere near over. The abilities that he has, the things he can do on and off the pitch and the effect he has on all the players, he has still got a lot to do in his career. There are still a lot of trophies England hope to be playing for.”

Time never stands still and Rashford faces a tough battle at United and England despite his rapid rise. United have been linked with a move for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata while Kane retained the Premier League’s Golden Boot and will be favourite to start at Hampden Park this weekend.

Asked about Morata’s possible arrival, Rashford said: “At a big club, you are going to attract big players. That’s what we want as the players that are at the cub. Anyone that can come in and help the club win trophies, which is the ultimate aim, they are the players that we want to bring in. Good competition is important.

“When you come away with England, there is always competition. It is good competition, you always improve and you continue your development when you are away from the club.”
