Wembley Stadium has been named the UK’s most iconic venue ahead of Wimbledon and Wales’ Millenium Stadium, according to a survey by Stubhub.

Nearly half of the 1,002 respondents (48.4 per cent) named the national football stadium, which has also played host to the NFL International Series, Rugby World Cup matches and major concerts by the likes of Coldplay and Madonna, the classic sporting venue in the country.

The 90,000 capacity stadium was reopened just under nine years ago, with the first competitive game an FA Trophy final between Kidderminster Harriers and Stevenage Borough.

Wembley has gained fame around the world for its renowned Wembley Arch, which stands 134 metres high.

Ahead of what is set to be a thrilling few months of sporting action Stubhub also asked its respondents to name the sporting events they were most excited about.

Anthony Joshua’s fight with Charles Martin was ranked number one, ahead of the Aviva Premiership rugby final, WWE Raw and Tottenham’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

Estanis Martin de Nicolas, general manager, international for StubHub said: “From being ringside for boxing or pitch side at football, we are a nation of fans who like to get close to the action. Brits continue to make sure they are there no matter what, so they don’t miss out on what could be the next most iconic sporting event.”
