Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says the club would be 'on alert' if former captain Cesc Fabregas decided to quit Barcelona this summer.

Wenger confirmed the Gunners negotiated a first refusal option on the Spain midfielder following his departure for £35million in 2011.

Fabregas was the subject of a £26m bid from Manchester United earlier this week, but his manager at Barcelona, Tito Vilanova, stated the player is keen to remain with the Spanish champions.

Wenger said "We have the [first option] clause in the contract so we would be on alert but at the moment that's not something we're after.

"At the moment, Fabregas has decided to stay one more year at Barcelona.

"Unless he has changed his mind, I don't know ... but that's what I've been told."

Vilanova said earlier this week that Fabregas was desperate to succeed at Barca.

He said: "I'm aware there have been offers, I had a conversation with him and he told me that he wanted to continue here and that he didn't want to go to another big club."
