West Ham legend Sir Trevor Brooking shares his Boleyn Ground memories

James Benge25 August 2015

Sir Trevor Brooking has been reflecting on what it means to wear the famous claret and blue of West Ham as the club enter their final season at the Boleyn Ground.

One of the greatest players in the club’s history, who will have a stand named after him at the Olympic Stadium just as he does at Upton Park, joined a group of fans at the launch of the club’s final home shirt before they move to Stratford.

Discussing the importance of the home shirt the former Irons midfielder, who played over 600 games for West Ham, said: “The shirt is always a strong link with any club and of course with West Ham the claret and blue has been embedded for many years.”

Over 18 years at the Boleyn Ground the midfielder became an iconic presence for West Ham and was most associated with a particular number.

“Number 10 was a coveted shirt number,” Brooking explained. “When it became available I was only too happy to grab it with both hands.”

Brooking was speaking as part of Betway’s #PrideInYourShirt campaign.
