West Ham squad is too thin to sell Javier Hernandez in January, says David Moyes

David Moyes has backed Javier Hernandez to continue scoring for West Ham and cooled talk of his exit, claiming his squad is far too thin.

The Hammers boss has continually made his desire to add to his squad this month clear, but reports linking his strikers away from the club persist.

The former Everton manager named an inexperienced bench for the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, with four academy products aged 21-and-under amongst the substitutes.

Most recently, Hernandez – who scored his first Premier League goal since October against the Cherries - has been linked with a move to Besiktas, however, with Andy Carroll’s injury Moyes says his squad is far too thin to allow anyone to leave.

“Well, Chicharito, there has been speculation about him but there has been speculation about Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho - there’s been speculation about every man and their dog here,” Moyes told reporters.

“As far as I am concerned you can look at my bench today and say ‘if there’s one club that doesn’t need to lose any players it is West Ham’, because of the numbers - we’re so short.

“Actually, if there’s one place we are actually quite big is the centre forwards, we have four or five but suddenly we’ve got injuries to some of them and because of that then we’re really short.

“We needed Chicharito, I think the sort of goal he got today might be typical, so we need to try and get a lot more balls in the box and hopefully he’s going to score a lot more for us in the coming weeks and months.”
