Standard Sport13 February 2015

West Ham have announced striker Andy Carroll will have surgery on his injured knee on Tuesday and as a result is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Carroll damaged a medial ligament in the 0-0 draw against Southampton on Wednesday night and manager Sam Allardyce today confirmed he is set for a spell on the sidelines.

Since arriving at the Boleyn Ground in 2012 the 26-year-old has been plagued by injury. An issue with his heel kept him out of the majority of last season's relegation battle, while the former Newcastle man missed the start of this season with a fractured foot.

The news is a blow for Carroll, who had been pushing for a place in Roy Hodgson’s next England squad for a Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania and friendly against Italy in March.

"The England international injured his left knee during the second half of Wednesday night's 0-0 Barclays Premier League draw at Southampton," a West Ham statement read.

"The recovery phase is expected to keep Carroll out for the remainder of the 2014/15 season."
