West Ham were today set to announce a contract extension for defender James Collins.

Slaven Bilic has been sufficiently impressed with the Wales centre-half to want to hand him a new deal. He said: “James has demonstrated what a good defender he is whenever he has been in the team. Off the pitch also, he has been very positive, even though he has been frustrated at times because he hasn’t been playing.

Collins, 32, is also keen to stay at Upton Park. “I don’t want to go anywhere else,” he said. “I would be happy to finish my career here. I love the club.”

The former Cardiff and Aston Villa player wants a regular spot in West Ham’s first team with places in the Wales team up for grabs for Euro 2016 in France.

Meanwhile, striker Andy Carroll has an outside chance of being fit for West Ham’s Boxing Day clash at Aston Villa. Carroll missed the goalless draw with Swansea with a groin injury. Manuel Lanzini is unlikely to face Villa but could be ready two days later for the home game against Southampton.
