England fans have been warned by FIFA not to chant about Brexit during their side’s World Cup clash with Belgium.

Football’s global governing body said the FA could face punishment if Three Lions supporters reference Britain leaving the EU in Thursday’s game.

The match has been billed as the ‘Brexit derby’ due to the EU headquarters being located in Belgium’s capital city Brussels.

A FIFA spokesperson told the Daily Mail that “displaying insulting or political slogans in any form” and “uttering insulting words or sounds” could lead to sanctions.

It comes amid tough negotiations between Theresa May’s government and EU negotiators over the details of Britain’s exit from the EU.

At the European championships in France in 2016, some England fans made their referendum intentions clear by chanting “F*** off Europe, we’re all voting out”.

Following the June 23 vote, the words of the chant changed to “we all voted out”.

England have not played another EU nation yet at the Russian World Cup so there has been no evidence of whether the chant will be repeated.

The Standard has contacted FIFA for comment.
