The Russian stadium that hosted today's match between Egypt and Uruguay was deemed too small to host a World Cup game, so officials came up with an incredible solution.

Bosses commissioned two huge stands at the Yakaterinburg stadium and removed walls that would have blocked fans’ view.

Photographs of the first game at the stadium between Egypt and Uruguay show crowds watching on from the towering stands through a cavernous gap were the stadium walls once stood.

Pictures taken from outside the stadium look as though the match is being viewed on a huge TV screen.

SB Nation Soccer shared an image from the stands on Twitter and wrote: "When you can't decide if you want to go to the game or watch it on TV."

Another person wrote: "I still cannot at Ekaterinburg Arena's added seats."

A third said: "The Ekaterinburg Stadium is basically every episode of Grand Designs when, despite Kevin McCloud's warnings, the couple ran out of money about four months in."
