Mohamed Salah has been left on the bench for Egypt’s World Cup opener against Uruguay.

The Liverpool forward failed to recover from the shoulder injury he suffered in the Champions League Final in time to make Hector Cuper’s starting line-up and it remains to be seen whether he will be sufficiently fit to feature as a substitute.

PAOK winger Amr Warda takes Salah’s place on the right, whilst Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny lines up in central midfield.

Egypt head coach Cuper had offered an optimistic assessment of Salah's fitness on Thursday, when he said: “He has recovered very quickly. We’ve paid a lot of attention to him.

“He has had training sessions with us. We have to see how he recovers from today, but I can say almost 100 percent he will play, save for any unforeseen factors at the last moment.”

Meanwhile Uruguay head coach Oscar Tabarez's side has a familiar look to it. Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani lead the line, whilst Lucas Torreira, set to sign for Arsenal, is on the bench.
