Former Spur Davis: Jol was a great coach and I hope they treat Ramos with more respect

When Martin Jol was sacked by Tottenham two months ago, Sean Davis could have been forgiven for thinking the Dutchman had got what he deserved. Instead, the Portsmouth midfielder believes it should just serve as a warning to his replacement Juande Ramos.

It was Jol who ended up making Davis's life a misery at White Hart Lane before he headed to Fratton Park in January 2006.

The move came only 18 months after Davis had joined Spurs from Fulham for around £3.5m but then quickly found himself frozen out of the first team.

He was signed when Jacques Santini was the manager and Frank Arnesen was sporting director. Within a few months, however, he suffered a serious knee injury and by the time he returned to full fitness, those two had been replaced by Jol and Damien Comolli.

But while Davis admits he didn't get on with Jol, he was shocked to see the way he was sacked in order to bring in Ramos from Sevilla.

He said: "They have a new guy in now and I just hope they treat him with more respect than they did Martin Jol.

"Despite my situation when I was at the club, I thought Martin was a great coach and got the best out of the players. I have no hard feelings towards him.

"I thought it was very harsh when they gave him the sack, even though he didn't give me a chance."

Davis hopes Ramos will do Portsmouth a favour by keeping Jermain Defoe, who has started only one game under the Spaniard, on the bench.

He added: "It does surprise me that Jermain isn't playing because he'd be top goalscorer if he was. He is one of the most clinical finishers I have seen."
