Former champion Justin Thomas has withdrawn from this weekend’s PGA Championship because of a wrist injury.

The American won his first, and so far only, major at the 2017 PGA Championship at Quaill Hollow, but will now miss this year's renewal, which starts at Bethpage Black Course on Thursday.

The 26-year-old, who finished in a tie for 12th at the first major of the year, the Masters, at Augusta last month, had been among the favourites for the tournament in New York State.

In a statement on Twitter, Thomas wrote: “Unfortunately I will be withdrawing from the 101st PGA Championship at Bethpage Black this week as my wrist is not yet fully healed.

“Obviously, as a past Champions, this tournament is extra special to me. It consistently has the strongest field in golf and I’m disappointed to not be among those competing this year but I’m optimistic about a return in the near future.”

He had been due to play alongside Australia’s Adam Scott and Spain’s Sergio Garcia in the opening round on Thursday. His place will now be taken by fellow American Kelly Kraft.
