Gazza in training with Wolves

Training day: Gazza at Wolves
14 April 2012

Wolves manager Dave Jones has given Paul Gascoigne the chance to get himself match fit by training with the Premiership strugglers.

And Jones has refused to rule out throwing the 36-year-old former England midfielder an unexpected Premiership lifeline.

Gascoigne, who has recently been playing for Chinese League B team Gansu Tianma and was expected to sign for a team in the Middle East, last played in the Premiership for Everton.

"We are trying to help him," Jones told Sky Sports News. "He's been doing training and running with us and the arrangement is open-ended - he stays as long as he wants to.

"Along the way - if he turns out to be what we know Paul can be - then you never say never.

"At the moment let's just give Paul a bit of time and space and the chance to get himself fit."

Gascoigne said: "I just wanted to get match fit and I'm enjoying the training. The opportunity came along to train with a Premiership team, which I never thought would happen a year ago.

"I can train very hard and do extra training with the fitness coach and then look at it from there."

Gascoigne must have thought his chances of playing in the Premiership again had disappeared when he joined Burnley in March, 2002, but must now be dreaming of one last hurrah.
