Hamilton: I didn't expect one win in my first season

Lewis Hamilton has admitted he did not even expect to win a race last season.

Before Sunday's Australian Grand Prix, Hamilton - who won four times in 2007 and missed out on becoming the first rookie world champion by just one point - said: "Last year in Melbourne I didn't know what to expect and nobody else knew what to expect.

"I nearly finished second, I got a third place and my first podium and it continued after that.

"But I never really expected to get a win in my first year."

Hamilton announced himself on the Formula One scene by overshadowing team-mate and world champion Fernando Alonso, a trend that continued throughout the season and which eventually led to an irreparable breakdown in the pair's working relationship.

And the 23-year-old from Stevenage recalls: "If you look at last year's race, the first race, I wasn't really nervous.

"I made a real split decision on turn one, I went down the outside, I managed to come out in third place and I think that was one of the fastest moments of the year."
