Helguson rescues replay for Hoops

Striker Heidar Helguson came off the bench to rescue QPR from FA Cup humiliation with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against the MK Dons.

Dean Bowditch had put the home side in front and QPR looked to have run out of time as they went in search of an equaliser.

But Helguson made the most of a mix-up in the home defence to level the scores two minutes from time.

The Dons gave warning of their attacking threat after nine minutes when Jabo Ibehre had the ball in the net following good work from Luke Chadwick only for the assistant referee to flag for offside.

It was the League One side playing the more constructive football and they should have made the breakthrough after 21 minutes when Ibehre broke clear and outstripped the QPR defence before sliding the ball to Chadwick who should have scored but whose tame right-foot shot was gathered easily by goalkeeper Radek Cerny.

The League One side continued to look the more dangerous even though DJ Campbell did have the ball in the Dons net but was ruled offside.

Campbell should have given QPR the lead after 53 minutes. Federico Macheda stole down the left flank and delivered a wonderful left-footed cross which evaded Dons goalkeeper David Martin, only for Campbell to send his far-post header wide of the post from point-blank range.

It was the Dons, however, who opened the scoring after 63 minutes. Shaun Williams crossed from the right and Helguson got into a tangle in the area, allowing Bowditch to dispossess him and send a left-footed strike past Cerny into the net.

QPR suffered a late blow when Alejandro Faurlin was taken off on a stretcher with what appeared a leg injury after receiving lengthy treatment after 83 minutes.

But there was a sting in the trail with Helguson cashing in on a mix-up in the Dons defence to slide the ball home for the equaliser after 88 minutes and earn a replay.
