Henrythenavigator holds off Raven's Pass to win Sussex Stakes

13 April 2012

Henrythenavigator, already a dual 2,000 Guineas winner for jockey Johnny Murtagh, added the prestigious Sussex Stakes to his victory roll on the second day of the five-day 'Glorious Goodwood' meeting.

The hot 4-11 favourite was a 16thGroup One success of the season for Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien who is well on course to equal the 23 Group One winners he sent out in 2001.

He is also chasing the world record of 25 Group One or Grade One races in a season set by American Bobby Frankel in 2003.

Henrythenavigator, who has twice beaten Epsom Derby winner New Approach this year, took up the running in the one mile (1.6 km) race with two furlongs (400 metres) to go and held on bravely by a head from gallant runner-up Raven's Pass (4-1).

Murtagh told Channel 4 Racing: 'The good horses have everything... when he hit the finish line he was still full of running.'

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have installed the winner as the new 7-2 favourite for the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita, California, in October.
