Injury blow for Beckham

12 April 2012

David Beckham's chances of winning an England recall suffered a major blow when he picked up a knee injury in Real Madrid's 1-1 draw with Getafe.

Beckham sustained the injury in the second half of Real's 1-1 draw with Getafe on Sunday night and was in noticeable discomfort before being substituted.

Further news on Beckham's condition is expected on Monday but, with an initial diagnosis of an injury to the internal lateral ligament in his right knee, he could be out for around a month.

England go to Israel on March 24 and then visit Andorra four days later in a crucial European Championships qualifying double header, but Beckham's chances of reclaiming a berth in Steve McClaren's squad now seem remote.

The midfielder's Bernabeu career seemed to have come to an end when manager Fabio Capello said he would never play for the club again following the announcement of his big-money move to Los Angeles Galaxy.

But, after impressing the Italian coach in training, the former England captain was brought back into the first team and marked his return with a goal.

His comeback took a dip when he was shown the red card for a late foul against Real Betis and the drama showed no signs of abating when he miscued a cross against Getafe, seemingly injuring his knee in the process.

Beckham, who struck the crossbar earlier in the game and had a hand in Real's goal, has already been ruled out the Spanish club's key Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich and he is also unlikely to have any chance of playing in the high-profile league clash against Barcelona.

Real's on-loan Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes also suffered a knee injury in the same match. When asked about the injuries, Capello said: "Neither of them will play in Germany.

"One of the injuries is serious and the other could be something important. We will have to see."
