It’s all quiet at Chelsea, perhaps a little too quiet

Peter Kenyon will cut the ribbon to open Chelsea's £20million training complex at Cobham on Thursday. It remains to be seen which of the current squad will reap the benefit of the magnificent facility next season.

Chelsea players will not be at the ceremony. Their first get-together, excepting John Terry's glitzy wedding bash last month, will be at the airport next Monday as they fly off on a pre-season tour of the United States.

By the time Chelsea return from the World Series of Football Tournament and get down to serious preparations aimed at regaining the Premiership crown from Manchester United, it is entirely conceivable that Jose Mourinho's squad will look very different.

Topping chief executive Kenyon's priorities is the thorny subject of Frank Lampard's contract extension. There is every possibility Lampard could be on his way to California with no new deal agreed, despite pleas from Mourinho for the club to sort out his inspirational midfielder's future.

Failure to offer him wage parity with top earners Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack, arguments over image rights and interest from both Barcelona and Juventus are at the core of Lampard failing to commit his future to the club.
