It's a bunfight for Tiger as spectator throws hot dog

13 April 2012

Golfers are used to chips but Tiger Woods had to contend with a hot dog being hurled at him by a spectator during his closing round of the Frys.com Open in California.

The former world No1 was preparing to putt at the seventh -his 16th hole of the day - when the man burst out of the crowd, shouting "Tiger, Tiger" and tossed the hot dog.

In truth, it was a pretty wayward shot, with the bun barely reaching the green while the sausage landed on the putting surface. The man then lay on the ground and was arrested with the authorities saying he appeared drunk.

"When I looked up, the hot dog was already in the air," said Woods, who missed his birdie putt at the hole. "He was pretty far away from me. I guess he wanted to be in the news and I'm sure he will."

Dan Diggins, the tournament's director of security, branded the hot dog hurler "an idiot" but then joked: "At least it wasn't a chili dog - that could have been bad."

Woods, in his first tournament for seven weeks, claimed his third straight three-under score of 68 to finish on seven under. That was 10 shots behind Bryce Molder, who took the title after beating fellow American Briny Baird at the sixth play-off hole.
