It's 'wicked' for Britain's Yamile Aldama as she takes giant leap forward

Yamile Aldama produced her best jump for over two years to qualify fifth for the final of the triple jump in her first outing in a British vest.

The 39-year-old, who has previously competed for Cuba and Sudan, is the newest addition to the team and is competing in Daegu after the birth of her son, Diego, who will celebrate his first
birthday tomorrow.

"Wicked is the only thing I can say," she said after a best effort of 14.35metres ensured her passage into Thursday's final.

"It's destiny that I'm here and I'm happy I've made the final. It was great to put the GB vest on - it was very emotional.

"Tomorrow is my younger son's birthday so hopefully I can give him a very good birthday present."

The only other Britain to qualify from her final in the opening session on day four of the championships was 5000m runner Helen Clitheroe, who snuck in as the last of the 15 qualifiers.

The 37-year-old was half a minute short of the career best time she set at the London Grand Prix earlier this month over the distance - hardly surprising in the hot temperatures - as she finished eighth in the first of two heats.

Despite qualifying for Friday's final, she cut a disgruntled figure afterwards. "It was very hot and I struggled," she said.

James Shane looked similarly uncomfortable in the conditions in the 1500m. He stayed with the main group in the first of three heats but the pace of the final lap proved too much and he ended up 10th and out of the semi-finals.

In the high jump, both Martyn Bernard and Tom Parsons had the ability to reach the final. But the pair struggled, with Bernard achieving 2.21m and Parsons failing with three attempts at 2.28m.
