Justin Gatlin feels the heat after his big freeze

Bad start: Gatlin has frostbite on both feet ahead of the Athletics World Championships

Justin Gatlin has arrived at the World Athletics Championships with frostbite on both feet.

The American, who won the 100metres at the 2004 Olympics, got the condition two weeks ago after going into a cryogenic chamber with wet socks.

Gatlin still has blisters and scars from the chamber, which athletes use to cool their muscles after a hard workout, but says he will be okay to run in Daegu.

"You wake up at 9am in Orlando and it's 90°F so we're already drenched with sweat," said Gatlin, whose four-year ban for doping ended last year. "I went into the booth, my socks were wet and froze to me instantly.

"Before I came to Daegu it was like walking on fiery pins and needles. It was all pussed up but it's now better than it was."
