Laugher profits as he shines in final

13 April 2012

Britain's Jack Laugher underlined his huge potential in his first World Aquatics Championships final today, finishing eighth in the 3metre springboard in Shanghai.

The 16-year old double world junior champion came into the final ranked 11th and a consistent performance - he scored 75 points or more in five of his six dives - saw him finish with a score of 453.50.

The top-eight finish guarantees Laugher a spot in the lucrative FINA World Series next season.

China's He Chong dominated the competition and was 45 points ahead of his nearest rival, Russia's Ilya Zakharov.

Neither of Britain's women in the 3m springboard got past the preliminaries. Hannah Starling, another 16-year-old, was 27th with 259.40 points, while Rebecca Gallantree was two places adrift with 251.45, a poor second dive ruining her chances of progressing.

There was disappointment too for Cassie Patten, who failed to finish the 5km open water race.

Patten aggravated an ongoing shoulder problem during the 10km race on Tuesday and the pain became too much today, forcing her to quit 1400m from the finish.
