Leeds complete Wise move

12 April 2012

Coca-Cola Championship strugglers Leeds on Tuesday night confirmed former England midfielder Dennis Wise as their new manager.

Swindon on Monday night gave permission for Wise and his County Ground assistant Gus Poyet to begin negotiations with the Coca-Cola Championship strugglers.

Talks were swiftly concluded and both Wise and Poyet, who becomes his Elland Road number two, will start work on Wednesday. Also joining Leeds is goalkeeping coach Andrew Beasley.

A statement from Leeds read: "The board of Leeds United would like to confirm the appointments of manager Dennis Wise, assistant manager Gus Poyet, and goalkeeping coach Andrew Beasley at Elland Road.

"A compensation package has been agreed between the two clubs and Swindon have placed on record their thanks to Leeds for the professional manner they have made their approaches.

"Dennis will take over as manager of the club from Wednesday, October 25 and will be assisted by Gus. Andrew joins us as goalkeeping coach with immediate effect."

Wise, 39, made his name in the Wimbledon side who won the 1988 FA Cup and later went on to captain Chelsea.

With former Chelsea chairman Ken Bates now in control at Leeds, Wise was quickly backed as a likely successor when Kevin Blackwell was sacked on September 20.

Wise and Poyet were both due at tonight's Carling Cup third-round match against Southend, but given the timing of their appointments they were due to watch from the stands. Bates discussed the appointments, and the procedure of choosing Wise and Poyet, in his programme notes for the match.

"After much deliberation the unanimous choice was Dennis Wise and his assistant Gus Poyet," Bates declared. "I am aware that he may not be everybody's cup of tea but this is not a popularity contest. It is a question of the right man to resolve a serious situation."
