Maloney gets bronze boxer

13 April 2012

Olympic boxing bronze medallist Darren Sutherland has turned professional and joined Frank Maloney.

The 26-year-old Dubliner is expected to make his debut in his home city on 18 December.

Sutherland was beaten by eventual gold medallist, Britain's James DeGale, in the middleweight semi-final but will now fight at super-middle.

Manager Maloney said: "From the minute I watched Darren in the Olympics he was the only fighter I wanted to sign. I believe he will become my fifth world champion following Lennox Lewis, Paul Ingle, Scott Harrison and David Haye."

Ireland's other boxing medallists Kenny Egan and Paddy Barnes are set to stay amateur for London 2012.
