Man Utd claim controversial win

Ryan Giggs

Ryan Giggs' second-minute penalty condemned Kenny Dalglish to a losing start as Liverpool manager as Manchester United recorded a 1-0 FA Cup triumph over the 10-man Merseysiders, who also had Steven Gerrard sent off.

Almost two decades after ending his first stint as Anfield chief, Dalglish has been charged with reviving their fortunes.

But there will be no Wembley appearance for the Reds this season thanks to Giggs' cool finish after Daniel Agger had tripped Dimitar Berbatov.

Dalglish's second stint as manager could not have got off to a worse start as Liverpool conceded a penalty after just 28 seconds. It looked debatable when Berbatov went down under Agger's challenge but after due consideration, referee Howard Webb gave it.

Liverpool's players protested but Giggs kept his cool to send Pepe Reina the wrong way.

Liverpool's extra man in midfield meant they were enjoying more possession than Sir Alex Ferguson would have liked but that soon changed after 32 minutes when Gerrard lunged in on Michael Carrick.

It didn't look good for the Liverpool man, who left the ground as he went over the top of his England team-mate's foot. Webb certainly took a dim view, brandishing a red card that will rule Gerrard out for three games.

And it was United who came closest to increasing their lead in stoppage time when Jonny Evans rose to meet Giggs' corner but powered his header against a post.

Liverpool went so close to getting level when Fabio Aurelio curled the free-kick towards the top corner, forcing Tomasz Kuszczak into an excellent save to claw it away.

Then a melee inside the Liverpool area included shots for Berbatov and Rafael, which were both blocked, a Giggs penalty appeal when he went down under Jonjo Shelvey's challenge and finally, an excellent Reina save to deny Patrice Evra.
