McConnell out of relays

12 April 2012

Britain's 4x400 metres relay team have been dealt a blow ahead of Friday night's semi-final race after Lee McConnell was forced to pull out through injury.

McConnell, 29, suffered a quad muscle tear in the second round of the individual event, which was eventually won by team-mate Christine Ohuruogu.

The Scot seemed almost certain to be in the team alongside Ohuruogu and Nicola Sanders as Britain chase a medal, and her absence may pave the way for 4000m hurdles bronze medallist Natasha Danvers to compete, while Donna Fraser and Vicki Barr make up the squad.

Athletics team leader Dave Collins said: "It is a big disappointment for Lee.

"She has made a huge contribution to the success of our women's 4x400m relay squad in recent years.

"She has our sympathy and as ever, UK Athletics will work closely with the athlete to assist with the her return to full fitness."
