McGeechan: I will be sticking with my club after the Lions tour is over

Chris Jones13 April 2012

Ian McGeechan has confirmed he will be in charge of London Wasps next season, dismissing fears he will quit club rugby after the Lions tour to South Africa this summer.

What appeared to be a natural conclusion to a record-breaking Lions coaching career for the 62-year-old, will now be merely the precursor to another season as Wasps' director of rugby, alongside head coach Shaun Edwards.

McGeechan's salary this season is being paid by the Lions to reflect the time he is having to spend as head coach of putting together a squad for South Africa.

McGeechan said: "I could have withdrawn totally from involvement with Wasps this season but I didn't want to do that. I have been able to work with Wasps although the Lions are the main priority since Christmas and that is why we brought in Tony Hanks to help coach the club.

"I have a rolling contract at Wasps and another season at the club would make it five years. Initially, I signed a two-year deal but since then things have just naturally carried on and that is what will now happen."

The Lions coaches and selectors meet in London today, their first gathering since the completion of the Six Nations.
