Montgomerie skins his rivals

13 April 2012

Colin Montgomerie achieved some compensation for losing his European No1 title when winning just under £300,000 at a Skins Game in California.

The Scot made a two-foot par putt worth £240,000 on the third playoff hole to beat defending champion Fred Couples at Landmark Golf Club.

Fiji's Vijay Singh, who won £185,000 and Spain's Sergio Garcia (£140,00) were eliminated on the first extra hole, the par-four 14th, after missing their birdie attempts while Montgomerie and Couples made theirs.

Montgomerie and Couples then both parred the 183-yard 15th, the second play-off hole, and went to the 563-yard 18th where Montgomerie parred the hole for victory after Couples found the water with his third shot.

It was Montgomerie's first Skins Game and became the sixth player to win on his initial appearance.

Meanwhile, Australian teenage golf sensation Aaron Baddeley plans to tackle the USPGA Tour next season.

The 19-year-old won a second successive Australian Open title in Melbourne by two shots from fellow Aussie Robert Allenby and said: "The US Tour is where I want to play, so that's where I'll be going."

Allenby, who shot a course record 64 in the third round, and led by one going into the final 18 holes, said: "Aaron has everything and could be the next Tiger Woods. I reckon he's one of the best players I've ever seen."
