Morkel ruled out

12 April 2012

England's hopes of claiming victory in the opening match of the NatWest Series were boosted by an injury to South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel.

Morkel has been ruled out of the day-night encounter at Headingley - the first game in the five-match series - with a side strain and replaced by Andre Nel, while all-rounder Vernon Philander will bat at number seven.

While the Proteas were without their leading spearhead, England welcomed back Steve Harmison for his first ODI appearance in two years following Thursday's shock reversal of his decision to retire.

Harmison, who suffered the worst figures ever by an England bowler in a ODI of 10-0-97-0 on his last appearance at Headingley against Sri Lanka two years ago, was the only change from the side which faced Scotland in Edinburgh on Monday.

The Durham fast bowler replaced Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan in attack, while Samit Patel was preferred to Nottinghamshire team-mate Graeme Swann as the slow-bowling option.
