Moyes needs January cavalry

Everton boss David Moyes is set to look for loan signings when the January transfer window opens, after losing striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu to a ruptured Achilles for the rest of the season.

Yakubu suffered his injury 10 minutes into Saturday's 1-0 Barclays Premier League win at Tottenham. To add to Moyes' problems in attack, Louis Saha was carried off with a hamstring complaint that will be assessed on Monday - while James Vaughan faces up to two months out for knee surgery.

Moyes, agreeing that he will have to look for loan deals, said: "That will be where we will try to see what is available. The club gives us all the money they can. But as most people know, there are not big cash reserves - so we'll have to do what we can."

Everton's current options include youngster Victor Anichebe or playing Tim Cahill as a striker, and he will ask the likes of Sunday's goalscorer Pienaar to weigh in with strikes to compensate for the loss of Yakubu.

Pienaar's winner against Spurs came after a quick free-kick, his shot deflecting in off Vedran Corluka. It meant Moyes marked his 300th game in charge of Everton with victory.

"I'm really fortunate to be given 300 games - a lot of managers these days don't get that opportunity," said the Scot. "I'm looking forward to having another 300 and I believe the good times are still to come."

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was angry with his players for switching off in the build-up to Pienaar's strike.

"If we got the result here, we could have lifted ourselves way out of that battle at the bottom," he said. "If you are not going to win, then don't get beaten.

"Don't go and give away a free-kick and turn your back on the ball. They play a short one; it's in the back of our net - and half of us are not looking at the ball.

"It cost us the game. At 0-0, it's okay - and you take a point."
