Murray defeated in Tokyo

Andy Murray has been knocked out of the Japan Open after losing his second round game with Jiri Novak 6-3 7-6.

The Scot, who was playing his first match in the singles event in Tokyo having received a bye, was up against the 31-year-old Novak for the first time in his career.

The Czech eased to victory in the first set and looked to be heading the same way in the second as he raced into a 4-1 lead, but Murray rallied to make to make it 6-6. However Kovak ensured the 19-year-old's brave fightback ended there as he eventually won the set 7-6.

Murray will now concentrate on progressing in the doubles event along with his brother Jamie, after the pair defeated Eric Butorac and Travis Parrott 7-5 6-3 on Tuesday.

In other matches Juan Monaco defeated fellow Argentinean Emiliano Massa 7-6 6-3 while Austrian Stefan Koubek crashed to a 6-3 6-4 loss at the hands of South Africa's Wesley Moodie. USA's Paul Goldstein was knocked out by German Rainer Schuettler 6-3 6-2.
