Murray faces French opponent

12 April 2012

Andy Murray has been drawn to face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round of the Australian Open, which starts on Monday.

The Scot, who won the season-opening Qatar Open on Sunday, is seeded ninth for the competition in Melbourne.

The pair have met on two previous occasions - Murray won last year in Metz, while Tsonga triumphed at a futures event in Nottingham in 2004.

Tsonga, 22, is currently ranked 38th in the world and represents a tough first-round opponent for the British number one.

Earlier, Murray continued his warm-up for the Australian Open by rounding off his Kooyong Classic campaign with a 6-2 7-6 (9-7) defeat of youngster Brydan Klein.

Murray was forced to dig deep in the second set by 18-year-old Australian Klein, but came through to win the fifth-spot play-off.
