Murray hails 'great year'

12 April 2012

British number one Andy Murray admits he has exceeded his own expectations this year.

The 19-year-old has leapt up the world rankings from 65th to 17th in the past year, as well as winning his first major tournament, the SAP Open in San Jose in February. He has also savoured wins over current World Number One Roger Federer and beat Andy Roddick on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

Murray said: "Winning my first tournament was special. Beating Federer, who is one of the best players ever to play tennis, was great. Beating Andy Roddick on Centre Court at Wimbledon was great as well. So I've had a lot of highlights. I wanted to get into the top 20 this time last year. That was what I was trying to do."
