Newcastle's bad boys

14 April 2012

Craig Bellamy finds himself in the dock at Newcastle after accusing boss Graeme Souness of lying and trying to drive him out of the club.

The Wales star insists he did not fake injury on the training pitch to try to avoid playing against Arsenal - only so he could have a meeting about his future with Souness and chairman Freddy Shepherd.

He becomes the latest Newcastle star to fall foul of club officials and now faces an internal disciplinary investigation which could spell the end of his career at the club.

Of the current squad, these are the three who have caused the most headaches on Tyneside:

Craig Bellamy - Fiery on the pitch, just as fiery off it, Bellamy was fined £750 for being drunk and disorderly in Cardiff two years ago, was reported to have thrown a chair at Newcastle coach John Carver prior to a UEFA Cup game, and raged at news of Wayne Rooney being linked with a move to Tyneside in the summer. He topped all of these misdemeanours during a live TV interview yesterday in which he accused Newcastle boss Graeme Souness of "lying" in response to the manager's claim that he had faked an injury to avoid having to play in midfield.

Kieron Dyer - Dyer was the first Newcastle player to rankle the management this season when he was alleged to have refused to play wide right in midfield against Middlesbrough. Fans put him in his place by booing him at St James' Park during England's friendly against Ukraine, but Dyer lasted longer than manager Sir Bobby Robson, who was axed in late August.

Laurent Robert - The danger of personal websites is that the player is the editor, and Robert has angered the St James' Park hierarchy with a series of internet outbursts. They have served to suggest the former Paris St Germain winger is not entirely happy at Newcastle, but Robert has recently vowed to knuckle down and prove his commitment to the club - for as long as he remains in favour with Souness.
