No surgery for Lee

12 April 2012

Fast bowler Brett Lee is hopeful of recovering in time for Australia's World Cup campaign after confirming he will not require surgery on his injured left ankle.

Lee was ruled out of the current Chappell-Hadlee one-day series against New Zealand after slipping during a fielding drill on Thursday and x-rays revealed there was no break, although subsequent scans showed he has suffered ligament damage.

However, after consulting leading Sydney specialist Kim Slater, the Aussie paceman is still unsure how long the injury will sideline him for, and he told Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph: "The good news is that I don't need an operation, I don't need any screws in the bones which is positive."

Lee added: "At the moment probably all I can say is that I'm 50/50 for the World Cup so fingers crossed.

"I'll have to reassess in about a week. I need doctor Kim Slater to talk to Alex Kountouris (Australia's physiotherapist) over in New Zealand so I'll know a lot more them."
