Old rivalry resumes at Elland Road

The Carling Cup trophy
12 April 2012

Manchester United will face old rivals Leeds in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Barclays Premier League champions have been drawn against Simon Grayson's npower Championship side. Ferguson will be looking to avenge the 1-0 FA Cup defeat to the same side two years ago at Old Trafford when Leeds were in League One.

Brighton, following their fine start to life in the Championship, were drawn at home to Liverpool at the Amex Stadium, while holders Birmingham - entering the competition at this stage because of their involvement in the Europa League - begin the defence of the trophy they won against Arsenal with a trip to face big-spending FA Cup winners Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

There are four all-Premier League ties with Chelsea at home to west London rivals Fulham, Aston Villa at home to Bolton, Stoke taking on Tottenham and Everton welcoming West Brom.

Shrewsbury's reward for their round two defeat of Swansea is a trip to play Arsenal, while Nottingham Forest will hope to upset Newcastle at the City Ground.

Rochdale, winners against QPR, visit either Aldershot or Carlisle in a second-round tie held over as a consequence of the riots which caused numerous first-round matches to be put back.

In the other matches, to be played week commencing September 19, Cardiff play Leicester, Wolves face Millwall, Burnley take on MK Dons, Blackburn are at home to Orient or Bristol Rovers, Swindon or Southampton face Charlton or Preston and Crystal Palace or Wigan are at home to Middlesbrough.
