Francesco Molinari will look to defend his first Major title as the Open Championship returns to Northern Ireland for the first time in more than half a century.

Molinari, who became Italy’s first ever Major winner at Carnoustie last year, followed his heroics on the links by becoming the first European to win all five of his matches at a Ryder Cup, but has looked a touch off his mesmeric best in recent weeks.

With the PGA Tour having a new schedule for this season, The Open is the final Major of the year. After Tiger Woods’ historic Masters win, Brooks Koepka’s defence of the PGA and Gary Woodland’s triumph at US Open, the Americans are on the verge of a clean sweep of the Majors.

Jon Rahm boosted his hopes with a win on the Lahinch links on the west coast of Ireland as he claimed the Irish Open last weekend, while there are high hopes for Rory McIlroy playing a home Open on a course where, before a redesign ahead of the Championship, he held the course record of 61, posted when he was 16.
